The Mala Kapela tunnel (literally “Small Chapel Tunnel” ) is the longest road tunnel in Croatia at around 5.8 km .
He leads the A1 on the lowest possible route through the Mala Kapela Mountains. The north portal is 562 m above sea level, the south portal at 575 m. The highest point in the tunnel is 599.2 m. The distance between the tubes is 15 m. Between the tunnels there are six cross tunnels for vehicles (every 840 m) and 14 for pedestrians (every 280 m).
The average daily traffic volume in 2008 was 12,107 vehicles; in the summer months 28,149. A total of 200,000 t of concrete, 19,000 t of asphalt and 124,000 m² of plastic insulation were used for the east tube.
On May 30, 2009, the second tube from the Mala Kapela and Sveti Rok tunnels was opened. Since then there are no more traffic jams in the tourist season towards the coast. Now the maximum travel speed is 100 km / h. It used to be 80 km / h with oncoming traffic.
