The Malzdarre , also known colloquially as the Owl Tower , is the last remaining defensive tower on the former city wall of Horn in the municipality of Horn-Bad Meinberg in North Rhine-Westphalia . It has been registered in the list of monuments of the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg since July 4, 1985 .
history
While the city walls were mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century, the four to seven defensive towers were only built at a later time. The malt kiln was built around 1500 on the southern part of the city wall. The new gate next to the tower was only opened in 1628. Formerly a tower between was Upper Gate (in the West) and new gate as Eulenturm or estimation stall or protecting stall called, this tower was dismantled after the fire. 1864
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hornsche Braueramt used the malt kiln.
architecture
The three-storey tower has a diameter of 8.50 m and a height of 17.50 m. The wall thickness is between 1.80 m (towards the city) and 2.50 m. Originally access was via a staircase on the city wall on the first floor, during renovation work after 1864 the access was moved to the ground floor. A stone from the burned down town hall has been inserted above the entrance door, which bears the coat of arms of the town of Horn, Count Simon VI. and his second wife Elisabeth von Schaumburg as well as the year 1592. Openings on the second floor served as loopholes and lookouts.
