The Lomben is a 1,496 meter high shield volcano on the island of Ambae in Vanuatu state . It rises about 3900 meters from the sea bed. Other names for this volcano are: Ambae Vulkan, Aoba , Omba . Occasionally the name of the volcano is confused with that of its crater ( Manaro ).
Volcanic activity
The mountain is considered to be one of the most dangerous active volcanoes in the world; the last outbreaks were recorded in 2006, 2011 and 2017. There are three crater lakes on the volcano : Manaro Ngoru , Vui (Voui) and Manaro Lakua . The Vui contains 50 million cubic meters of water. As a precaution, up to 5000 people who lived in the immediate vicinity of the volcano have been evacuated in the past.
