Mandalay was an English band from London that can be assigned to trip hop .

history

When Saul Freeman separated from the Thieves and thus from David McAlmont, he was looking for a suitable singer through an advertisement in the music magazine Melody Maker to implement his vision of "soulful music" by founding a new band. “A song is determined by the vocals, behind a great voice everything has to take a back seat.” Was his idea. The female voice should sound like Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins or Shara Nelson from Massive Attack . When Nicola Hitchcock answered his ad, he saw that she could live up to this claim, as she not only had the harmonious expressiveness, but also the linguistic means that seemed to give Freemans Sound its individual note. After six months of intensive studio work, the album Empathy was released . Curiously enough, this album is often traded as an unreleased album by the group Portishead on the Internet . Guest musician on this album is trumpeter Jon Hassell .

In mid-2000, Mandalay switched to the major label V2 Records . The album Instinct (Europe) and Solace (USA) were released here.
