The magazine is published monthly in the United States and has been published since April 1975. Mandate belongs to the company Mavety Media Group . The magazine is one of the oldest gay erotic magazines in the world. Mandate has a circulation of around 115,000 copies. The magazine primarily targets homosexual and bisexual men. The magazine contains photographs of naked men, often well-known porn stars from the film industry, as well as erotic fictional articles and interviews.

The magazine originally belonged to Modernismo Publications (MP), which also published Honcho and Playguy magazines . In 1974, MP was founded by George Mavety . Mandate was initially edited by John Devere ; he was followed by Joseph Arsenault and then Sam Staggs .
