Manfred Baier (born February 9, 1936 in Dresden , German Reich ) is a German biologist , phytopathologist and documentary filmmaker .

The son of a student councilor studied biology, chemistry and phytopathology at the Westphalian Wilhelms-Universität Münster from 1956 to 1962. Afterwards, from 1963 to 1964, Manfred Baier worked at the Bacteriological Institute of the city of Duisburg and in 1965 went to the chemical giant BASF -AG, of which he belonged for over three decades until he was 60. As a result of his longstanding affiliation with the BASF Group, Baier has developed into a strong advocate of genetic engineering, especially when used against virus epidemics, and is a member of a corresponding lobby group called the “Green Reason Forum”.

Activities in film and television

Manfred Baier has also been active in the documentary film sector since the mid-1970s and focused his attention entirely on natural issues. As a film writer and director, he has been ahead of the game by Millions of Years (1975) since his 26-minute productions . a. received the Grand Prix of Montreux and a nomination for an Oscar in the category of Best Short Documentary in 1976 , has received several awards. Between 1975 and 1996, Dr. Baier won the German Business Film Prize twelve times, and from 1975 to 1986 he won the Grand Prix at the International Film and Video Congress four times. In 2000 he was able to receive the EXPO 2000 special award twice. Baier was also the initiator and designer of the ARD series “On the trail of nature”. In 1993/94 Baier also worked as a lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy .
