The Manhattan Life Insurance Company , shortly Manhattan Life is an American insurer , which the life and health insurance business is aligned.

History and background

The company was founded in 1850 by the former men's outfitter Alonzo Alvord , who after a few years as an insurance broker recognized the emerging trend towards life insurance and therefore initiated his own insurer. The company was successful and grew rapidly, so in the early 1890s it commissioned the construction of its own office building: when completed in 1894, the Manhattan Life Insurance Building was the first skyscraper to be over 100 meters high, making it the largest of its kind Art. The company later relocated its headquarters to Houston , Texas .

The company grew in particular through acquisitions, such as the takeover of Central United in 1993 or Western United in 2013. In 2017, Central United was renamed Manhattan Life Assurance Company of America to better fit the brand profile. A total of four life and health insurance companies currently belong to the insurance group.
