Mank Muern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mank Muern is the first volume of poetry by Hermann Claudius . It was published in 1912. The work was initially subtitled "Grotstadtleeder", later editions then "Ein Niederdeutsches Gedichtbuch" (1934) or "Gedichte in Plattdeutscher Sprache" (1953).

The volume describes contemporary life in the big city, especially that of workers in the port and in the factories. The social approach of the poetry and the description of the metropolitan world is considered a “groundbreaking achievement” in Low German dialect poetry , but did not lead to a direct successor to other similar works. There is also disagreement about whether socio-critical naturalism is expressed in the work. The poems often seem to be written from the attitude of an alienated bystander. Today, however, it is undisputed that Mank Muern, as it describes the restlessness of pre-war Hamburg in form and content, is one of the highlights of Low German poetry.

effect

Although novel and very well received, no direct effect of the volume on Low German literature can be discerned.

With Plattdüütsch Leed , the band then set a modern folk band to music in the early 1980s. In 1982 a long-playing record with the Ohnsorg actress Edda Loges was released, as was a music book under the title Mank Muern .
