Mannequebeurre
Mannequebeurre ( Dutch : Monnikenbure ) is a hamlet in the French commune of Saint-Folquin in the Pas-de-Calais department . It is more than two kilometers south of the village center of Saint-Folquin, along the Mardick Polder watercourse.
history
The area used to be at the mouth of the Aa, which was gradually drained in the early Middle Ages. The area became known as the Land van den Hoek (French: Pays de l'Angle) and included the parishes of Saint-Folquin (Saint-Volkwin), Saint-Omer-Capelle (Saint-Omer-Kapelle), Sainte-Marie-Kerque (Saint-Mariakerke) and Saint-Nicolas (Sint-Niklaas on the Aa).
The place name Mannequebeurre, formerly also Monnequebeurre, would refer to the "court of the monks". An old mention of the place name is Monekebure in a document from Saint Bertinus in 1269.
language
In the Middle Ages, Mannequebeurre was still in the Dutch-speaking area, but - although it was located in Flanders - over time it was Romanised or mainly French-speaking.
