Mano Ziegler

Herman Eugen "Mano" Ziegler (born June 7, 1908 in Wyhlen , Baden; † October 1991, Isny im Allgäu ) was a German test pilot , journalist and writer .

Ziegler studied at the School of Physical Education in Berlin (DHFL), was 1932 World University Champion Diving and member of the German Olympic team from the 1936th

During the Second World War he was initially only used as a transfer pilot for fighter planes because of his "old age", but then volunteered for test command 16 .

In addition to Heini Dittmar , Rudolf Opitz and Wolfgang Späte , he was one of the test pilots and flyers of the Messerschmitt Me 163 , the rocket aircraft developed by Alexander Lippisch . The Me 163 was the first aircraft to exceed the speed of 1000 km / h and thus reached the limit of the sound barrier . After the failure of the three Klemm factory pilots Voy, Perschall and Lamm, he and Sergeant Nelte were given their duties. He was soon one of the pilots with the most take-offs on the Me 163. After this time, he was entrusted with pilot training for the Jagdgeschwader 400 on the Udetfeld near Warthenau in 1944 .

Writing and journalistic activity

In 1936 Ziegler published his first novel. After the Second World War he worked as a journalist and writer. From 1957 to 1962 Ziegler was editor-in-chief of Flug Revue magazine .
