Mantou ( Chinese  饅頭  /  馒头 , Pinyin mántou ) is a specialty of Chinese cuisine .

It is a soft, whitish steamed bread made from wheat flour, water and yeast, which is preferably eaten in northern China and Taiwan . The consistency is reminiscent of steamed noodles .

Legend

According to legend, the word Mantou is said to have originally been written using the characters ( 蠻 頭  /  蛮 头 , mántóu  - "barbarian head"), which have the same pronunciation.
