Manuel de la Cruz dead

Manuel de la Cruz Tot (* 1790 in Cobán , † 1815 in Guatemala City ) was a Prócer in Guatemala .

Tot belonged to the Kekchí ethnic group .

Tot was studying grammar because he was planning to go to college. He was a busy interpreter . He stayed alternately in Coban and Guatemala City.

On December 12, 1802, Tot made a statement at the Real Audienca for a procedure to reject the increase in the tribute (annual poll tax for indigenous people).

Conspiración de Belén

In 1813, Tot was a participant in a conspiracy in the Convento de Belén, a place where the Instituto Normal Central para Senoritas Belen is located in Zona 1 of Guatemala City today. Under the chairmanship of the monk Juan de la Concepción, Tomás Ruiz, Manuel Julián Ibarra, José Francisco Barrundia, the monk Victor Castillo and some colonial officials planned the arrest of the Alcalde Mayor, Manuel de Bustamante, his expulsion with all non-conspirators to Spain, the liberation of the prisoners from Nicaragua, their arming, the confiscation of the royal coffers, the proclamation of independence. The starting signal was supposed to be a signal rocket at midnight on Christmas Eve 1813.

On December 21, 1813, this conspiracy failed due to treason.

Tot was brought to Guatemala City in 1815, handed over to the colonial power, tortured and chained.
