After it was founded, the company was best known as Canada Packers . The company was founded in 1927 through the merger of several food-producing companies. The main business area of the company was initially meat processing. The company exported pork to the UK. By expanding to the west of the country, the company became Canada's largest slaughterhouse. The company began to open up other market areas and produced a. a. Peanut butter cream, cheese products and baked goods. In 1975 the company was the 14th largest in Canada. During the 1980s, the company ran into financial difficulties. It was bought by British Hillsdown Holdings , which has either sold or closed many slaughterhouses. The company also merged with Maple Leaf Mills . From this merger, the now active company Maple Leaf Foods emerged . By merging and managing David Newton as CEO and Lewis Rose as CFO, the company returned to profitability. Some time later, the company was bought by Wallace McCain , the former Vice President of McCain Foods. Wallace McCain was ousted from the family business McCain Foods by his brother and co-owner Harrison McCain. In 2003 the company took over competitor Schneider Foods . The company is one of Canada's largest agricultural companies and has large poultry farms, pig farms and wheat fields spread across the country.
