Maplelawn (also Maplelawn and Gardens ; dt. About maple lawn ) is the name of a former residential house with a walled garden in Ottawa .
Location and description
Maplelawn is located on Richmond Road in Westboro , approximately 6 km southwest of the city center. The property is surrounded on two sides by a meadow that extends to the Macdonald Parkway on the Ottawa River .
The two-and-a-half-story building is designed in a classic style and made of limestone .
history
William Thomson, a retired British officer, had the house built in the 1830s as the main house on an 80 acre farm outside of what was then Bytown .
Maplelawn was later bought by a timber merchant. In 1950 the house came into federal possession.
Today the building is managed by the National Capital Commission and houses a restaurant . The garden is tended by volunteers and can be visited.
