María is a novel by the Colombian writer Jorge Isaacs .

Isaac's only novel was published in 1867 and contains many autobiographical elements. It is considered to be one of the most important works of Spanish-language literature of the 19th century.

The tragic story of love between María and her cousin Efraín is both a historical drama and a contemporary document. In addition to the idealistic version of love until death and extensive descriptions of the author's homeland, Isaacs' María is about the background of slavery in Colombia in the 19th century.
