Marcello Dell'Utri

Marcello Dell'Utri (born September 11, 1941 in Palermo ) is a former Italian politician who gained notoriety for his ties to the Mafia .

Life

After the classical Matura in Palermo, he studied law at the state university in Milan from 1961 , where he met Silvio Berlusconi . After several years as a football coach and sporting director in Milan, Rome and Palermo, he joined the Cassa di Risparmio delle Province Siciliane in Catania in 1970 . In 1974 he returned to Milan, where he worked for Berlusconi's construction company Edilnord. Since then he has always been a close loyal to Berlusconi and founded the political movement Forza Italia with him in 1993 . From 1996 to 2001 Dell'Utri was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies , from 1999 to 2004 a member of the European Parliament and from 2001 to 2013 a member of the Italian Senate .

Convictions for Mafia contacts

Dell'Utri was sentenced to nine years in the first instance on December 11, 2004, and to seven years in the second instance in 2010 on appeal. In the opinion of the court, he had served as an intermediary between the Cosa Nostra and Berlusconi. The verdict was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal . He had not served a previous prison sentence of two years and three months for tax fraud due to his parliamentary work.

Because of his contacts with the Mafia, Dell'Utri was sentenced to seven years in prison again in March 2013. In April 2014, he went into hiding shortly before the final conviction by an appeals court. After a European arrest warrant was issued , he was finally arrested in Lebanon and extradited to Italy.
