Marchfeld Competition Forum

The Marchfeld Competition Forum ( MCI ) is an association of Central and Eastern European competition authorities . The forum was founded on July 1st, 2008 in Schlosshof im Marchfeld (Austria) and meets at irregular intervals. The initiators of this platform are the Austrian Federal Competition Authority (General Director Theodor Thanner) and the Czech Competition Authority (Chairman Martin Pecina). It serves to improve cooperation and cooperation between national authorities.

tasks

The tasks of the competition authorities include the implementation of national antitrust laws and, at EU level, the application of Articles 81 and 82 of the EC Treaty . For the majority of the members of the initiative (13 European countries - including Switzerland and Croatia, which are not EU members)

  • the implementation of merger controls,
  • Investigations and investigations into price and cartel agreements and
  • Analysis of dominant positions of individual companies (up to monopolies or oligopolies) and the prevention of abuse of market power.

The aim is to ensure functioning competition and to counteract distortions and restrictions of competition.

aims

The goals of the Marchfeld Competition Forum are formulated in the Marchfeld Declaration (Memorandum of Understanding). They essentially consist in promoting cooperation and cooperation between national competition authorities. Competition violations are often not a purely national problem, but affect supraregional / international markets. An effective fight against offenses in the area of ​​competition can therefore only be achieved through joint action. This results in the following goals of the MCI

  • Cooperation and joint development in law enforcement and competition policy
  • Training initiatives and high level trainings
  • Exchange of information - also in case processing, as far as the legal situation allows.
