Marcus Cocceius Nerva (lawyer)
Marcus Cocceius Nerva († 33 AD) was a Roman senator and lawyer of the 1st century AD and the grandfather of the Roman emperor Nerva .
Nerva was a suffect consul around the year 22 AD. From 24 until his death he was responsible for the water supply of the city of Rome as curator aquarum . As the closest friend ( proximus amicorum ) of Tiberius , he was the only senator to accompany the emperor when he retired to Campania in the year 26. In the year 33 he took his own life against the will of Tiberius, because he supposedly no longer wanted to see the further decline of the state.
Nerva was an important jurist of the early classical Roman law . He was the predecessor of the lawyer Proculus as the head of the so-called Proculian school of law . His son of the same name has also emerged as a lawyer.
