Marcus Ulpius Marcellus

Marcus Ulpius Marcellus was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD .

A military diploma proves that Marcellus 119 was prefect of the Roman fleet stationed in Ravenna ( classis praetoria Ravennas ).

  1. According to Werner Eck , Marcellus' Roman citizenship probably goes back to Trajan (98–117), when he was already emperor; command of the fleet is therefore an exceptional example of the social advancement of new citizens, since it usually took longer to be accepted into the Equester Ordo .
