The Mare de Namga is a lake in the municipality of Kokorou in western Niger .

geography

The Mare de Namga is located immediately south of the village of Namga, which belongs to the rural municipality of Kokorou in the Téra department in the Tillabéri region. Like the Mare de Kokorou located further to the west, the lake is part of the Kokorou-Namga wetland complex , which is protected under the Ramsar Convention .

The Mare de Namga originated in the bed of a no longer existing right tributary river of the Niger River . The area of the lake varies greatly. In years with low rainfall it dries up completely. Due to alluvial deposits , its maximum depth is less than six meters.

To the east, south and west of the lake there are floodplains and plateaus with the valleys of small temporary tributaries. In the north and north-east of the lake there is a landscape of moving sand dunes. In the hot and dry climate of the Sahel zone , the Mare de Namga contributes to a microclimate that improves the conditions for arable farming, livestock farming and hunting as well as biodiversity . It also helps to replenish the aquifer .

colonization

Besides the village of Namga, which had 1,440 inhabitants in the 2012 census, there are other settlements around the lake: the village of Santché in the east, the hamlet of Wadèye in the south, the hamlets of Gnamgou and Kagey in the southwest and the hamlet of Kourfadjé in the northwest.

ecology

In the basin of the Mare de Namga, Mitragyna inermis is the most important tree species. The gum arabic acacia can be found at the edges of the pool . The fauna is characterized by water birds, both migratory birds and year-round resident animals. The lake also serves as a watering place for gazelles and monkeys.
