The Mare de Kokorou (also: Mare de Kokoro ) is a lake in the municipality of Kokorou in western Niger .

geography

The Mare de Kokorou is located immediately south of the village Kokorou, which is the capital of the rural municipality of the same name, which belongs to the Téra department in the Tillabéri region. The landscape north of the lake is characterized by wandering sand dunes. On the other sides there are floodplains and small valleys with soils rich in iron. Like the Mare de Namga further east, the Mare de Kokorou is part of the Kokorou-Namga wetland complex , which is protected under the Ramsar Convention .

Both lakes are remnants of an earlier large tributary river of the Niger River . The area of the Mare de Kokorou varies greatly depending on the season and climatic conditions: in the period from 1997 to 2017 between 520 to 2398 hectares . It is considered the largest lake in western Niger. While it sometimes dried out completely before, this has not been the case since about 2008. As the year progresses, the lake fills during a short rainy season that occurs between June and September and empties during a long dry season. The lake is usually largest in September and October, while it has low water in June before the first rainfall.

The catchment area of the Mare de Kokorou is 217 km². Five temporary main streams with several side streams flow into the lake. The water flow of the feeder streams increased due to increased deforestation for the mining town of Komabangou, which emerged at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries . Due to alluvial deposits , the depth of the lake is shallow and does not exceed six meters.

colonization

In addition to the village of Kokorou, there are several hamlets around the lake: Farey Banguia in the northwest, Diba in the north, Koya in the northeast and Bango Banda in the southeast. The population belongs almost exclusively to Islam . In addition, a mythical snake is revered as the protective spirit of the Mare de Kokorou and its residents.

ecology

The Mare de Kokorou is an important gathering place for migratory birds. Mammals, including gazelles, use them as watering places. Predatory catfish , West African lungfish and Oreochromis niloticus live in the water . Around the lake there is a dense population of Arabian acacia trees with 70 to 80 individual trees per hectare. Real papyrus thrives on the water .

Economical meaning

At the Mare de Kokorou fishing as well as vegetables, fruit and occasionally rice cultivation are operated. The lake serves as a drinking place for livestock farming and the fertile surrounding area as pasture. The body of water is of outstanding importance for the abstraction of water for household purposes. Access to the lake is controlled by the Kokorou canton chief, a traditional ruler (chef traditionnel) who is responsible for managing all natural resources.
