Doreen Dredge

Doreen M. Dredge (married Wolff; born July 14, 1931 in Kelvington , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian high jumper .

Life

Dredge attended high school in her hometown of Kelvington. There she was discovered in a high jump competition by Joe Griffiths, who trained the Canadian athletics and swimming team for the Olympics. With his support, she broke the youth world record in high jump shortly afterwards.

In 1948 Dredge became Canadian champion and set the national record of 1.60 m on June 25 in Winnipeg in an Olympic qualifying competition. As the youngest athletics team member, she qualified for the 1948 Olympic Games in London at the age of 17 . There she jumped 1.58 m and thus shared fourth place with Vinton Beckett . Both were just behind the bronze medal winner Micheline Ostermeyer (1.61 m).

After graduating from high school, Dredge gave up jumping. She attended a teacher training college and then worked as a teacher. Eventually she married Bernard Wolff and moved to a farm in Saskatchewan.
