Assumption Cathedral (Aleppo)
The Assumption Cathedral ( Arabic كاتدرائية سيدة الانتقال, DMG Kātidrāʾīyat Sayyidat al-Intiqāl ) is the cathedral of the Syrian Catholic Church in the Syrian city of Aleppo . It is currently being rebuilt due to war damage from 2012.
history
For the Syrian Catholic Church in Aleppo, the Church of Our Lady of the Syrians , built around 1500, today's Church of Mar Assia al-Hakim , in the Christian district of al-Judaide, served as a cathedral. In the course of the 20th century, a large part of the Syrian Catholic community migrated from al-Judaide to other parts of Aleppo. For the overall growing community, a new main church in modern architectural style with concrete was built in the 1960s in the center of Aleppo and consecrated as a cathedral in 1970.
During the civil war in Syria in 2012, a rocket struck the upper part of the wall of the Assumption Cathedral during a church service, tearing a hole in the wall and injuring ten people. After the Islamist rebels were driven out at the end of 2016, the restoration of the Cathedral of the Assumption began, and in the course of this, the Badawi brothers made new frescoes in the church in 2018.
