The Assumption Cathedral ( Arabic كاتدرائية سيدة الانتقال, DMG Kātidrāʾīyat Sayyidat al-Intiqāl ) is the cathedral of the Archeparchy of Bosra and Hauran of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Chabab (خبب) in Syria . The church was built around the year 900.

history

Christianity has already had a very long presence in Chabab . For the cathedral of Chabab, which is considered to be the most important architectural monument of Chabab, the date of construction is given as the year 900. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Orthodox Church of the Antiochene Greeks, also known as Melkites ("loyal to the king"), split into parts that continued to orient themselves towards Constantinople - Greek Orthodox - and those who were tied to Rome - the Greek Catholics , who continued to be called Melkites, in contrast to the Orthodox. Chabab became a Melkite Greek Catholic site. The Archeparchy of Bosra and Hauran of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church with its seat in the Assumption Cathedral of Chabab was created in 1881 by amalgamating the Archdioceses of Bosra and Hauran. The old church of Chabab is a Melkite cathedral to this day.

architecture

The church has a rectangular floor plan and a flat roof with a dome in the middle, the drum of which has twelve arched windows that let light into the interior of the church. The bell tower with a rectangular cross-section stands on the western corner of the building. There are two crosses of equal size on the central dome and the dome of the bell tower. On the northwest side there is a portico with five pointed arches and an entrance door below, on the southwest side (opposite to the altar) with three arches.

Diocese and bishop

The Greek Catholic Cathedral of Chabab is the seat of the Archeparchy of Bosra and Hauran ( Archidioecesis Bostrensis et Auranensis Graecorum Melkitarum ) in the southernmost part of Syria, which emerged from the former Archdiocese of Bosra. In 2017 it comprised around 10,000 believers in 29 parishes with 15 priests. Eparch has been Archbishop Elias El-Debei, born on September 27, 1970, since February 1, 2019 .
