|
Chabab ( Arabic خبب Chabab , DMG Ḫabab ) is a small town in the Darʿā governorate in the south of Syria with a high Christian population, mostly members of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church . The place has about 10,000 inhabitants.
location
Khabab is located about 57 kilometers south of Damascus in the northern plain of the Hauran . The Damascus expressway reaches the Jordanian border after another 70 kilometers . The next larger city, Dera'a , is 55 kilometers south.
history
Christianity has already had a very long presence in Chabab. The date of construction of the Assumption Cathedral of Chabab, which is considered to be the most important architectural monument of Chabab, is given as the year 900. After the split in the Orthodox Church of the Antiochene Greeks living here at the beginning of the 18th century, Chabab became a Melkite Greek Catholic place. Since 1881 the cathedral has been the seat of the Melkite Archeparchy of Bosra and Hauran in 1881 .
