Church of the Annunciation (Ljubljana)
The Church of the Annunciation (Slovenian: Cerkev Marijinega oznanjenja ) or Franciscan Church ( Frančiškanska cerkev ) is located on Prešeren Square in Ljubljana and was built between 1646 and 1660. The facade rises dominantly over the main square and the “Three Bridges” ( Tromostovje ) opposite, making the church one of Ljubljana's distinctive landmarks.
The early baroque building consists of the main nave and two side aisles. After many of the original frescoes were destroyed in the earthquake of 1895 , the impressionist Matej Sternen was commissioned to redesign.
The nearby Franciscan monastery , which has existed since the 13th century, houses a considerable library with incunabula and medieval manuscripts.
