The Church of the Assumption of Mary is a former Catholic parish church at Mündelheimer Strasse 179 in Duisburg-Hüttenheim . The church in the south of Duisburg was built between 1957 and 1958 according to plans by Fritz Schaller . It has been a listed building since September 17, 2007.

Duisburg jazz fairs

The "Duisburg jazz fairs" from 1964 to 1967 were broadcast on radio and television and thus became known nationwide. Two theologians, a pedagogue and a church musician had come together at this church to renew the liturgical parish chant. Rolf Hucklenbruch, Knud Kalisch, Gerd Lugge (née Slodzek) and Horst Ambaum, who belong to the church choir of the Assumption of Mary, enthusiastically embraced this new form of parish singing and founded the duisburg gospel group.

The third jazz mass at Easter contained the extract song You, Lord, gave us your firm word . Leo shoes, cantor on the Assumption of Mary, had written the text of this chant on a spiritual melody. The song was included in the regional part of Rhineland - Westphalia - Lippe of the Evangelical Hymnal (EG 570).

The musicians Rolf Hucklenbruch, Knud Kalisch, Gerd Lugge and Horst Ambaum played an important role in the development of modern church music, which had its origins in the Hüttenheim church. The group went on tour across Germany to collect donations for Friedensdorf International . In 1972 the Duisburg gospel group disbanded because it encountered increasing resistance in the church.

The last mass celebration in the Assumption of Mary was co-organized by the Duisburg gospel group , which came together again after 35 years for this purpose.

Vacancy and search for new use

In January 2008 the community celebrated the last mass in the church on Mündelheimer Straße. Since then the church building has occasionally been used for concerts. Various plans for re-use, e.g. B. through a Waldorf school or the Georgian Orthodox Church, have not become concrete.

In March 2009 , the Caritas Association opened a meeting and counseling center for senior citizens in the parish of the city of Duisburg.
