Maria Pita
María Mayor Fernández de Cámara y Pita (* 1565 in Sigrás , Cambre , Spain ; † 1643 ), known as María Pita , is seen as a heroine in the defense of La Coruña , northern Spain, against the attack of the English Armada on the Spanish mainland in Venerated in 1589.
history
On May 4, 1589, English forces, already in control of the lower town, broke through the defense of the old town. María Pita was helping her husband defend himself when he was fatally wounded. María Pita is said to have killed an attacking English standard-bearer. It is said that she herself appeared on the wall and shouted: Quen teña honra, que me siga! (Galician: "Whoever has honor, follow me!"). Thereupon the British attack could be pushed back, not least through the participation of other women. This is documented about Inés de Ben , who was treated for two shots received during the siege. The English later gave up the siege and withdrew to their ships. María Pita was born by the Spanish King Philip II . honored and rewarded by granting her a military officer's pension for her husband killed in battle.
