Mary with Child is a picture by the Mannerist painter Parmigianino . It is now in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth , Texas. It was not assigned to Parmigianino until the 1980s.

Image content

The painting shows the Blessed Mother, who turns to the baby Jesus. Mary's halo is only indicated by a thin, golden line. Her robe is gathered at the shoulder with a clasp adorned with a cameo . The baby Jesus is depicted as a powerful boy who crouches on a bright red pillow and seems to be about to stand up, supported by his mother. The darkly shaded background shows a drapery that contrasts in color with the robe of Mary. On the left half of the picture, the dark green turns into black darkness, in front of which Maria and the child are staged plastically by a bright spotlight.

Presumably in the 18th century the picture was enlarged on all four sides. This means that the close-up view of the figures that is characteristic of Parmigianino has been partially lost.

Classification in the complete work

The picture is executed with a loose, quick brushstroke and is reminiscent of an oil sketch. But it is by no means an unfinished picture, but is an example of the free, open style of painting that can be found in Parmigianino's work, especially in his early work.

In addition to this picture, there are several drawings that show that Parmigianino dealt intensively with this traditional representation of a half-length Madonna. However, it is the only surviving painting that shows the Mother of God and the child alone. The structure of the picture refers to an intensive study of Raphael's Madonnas .
