Mariam Hakobjan ( Armenian Մարիամ Հակոբյան ; born August 17, 1949 in Yerevan , Armenia ) is an Armenian sculptor and painter.

Education and career

Hakobjan completed her undergraduate studies in 1968 at the Yerevan State University of Fine Arts and graduated in 1974 from the Yerevan State Art and Theater Institute. In 1979 she became a member of the Armenian Artists' Union and was chairman of the sculpture section for many years. She was the founder of the creative center “NorEon”, which promotes the visual arts of Armenia worldwide and helps Armenian artists with their professional careers.

Hakobjan worked at the Children's Center for Aesthetic Education and Student Recreation Center in Yerevan from 1976 to 1990, and was a faculty member at the Roslyn Institute of Fine Arts from 1993 to 1997.

During her career, Hakobjan took part in numerous exhibitions, sculpture symposiums, festivals and biennials in Armenia and abroad. Hakobjan has received many awards and prizes, such as the Florence Biennale (1998), the Stone Monument Competition in China (2001), the International Sculptor Symposium in Lithuania (2003) and the International Ice Sculpture Festival in Russia (2004). Her small sculptures and graphics are shown in many state private galleries and museums; their monumental sculptures can be seen all over the world.

Her work "Belief" (also "Armenian Cross"), a large stone cross (285 × 150 × 190 cm) made of basalt and bronze, was selected in 2001 by the Armenian community of Vienna on the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the introduction of Christianity as the state religion of Armenia now on Armenierplatz (Kolonitzgasse / Obere Viaduktgasse) near the  Armenian Church Vienna .
