Marian Zacharski (* 1951 ) is a former Polish intelligence officer , brigadier of the Polish Interior Ministry during the Cold War and the Third Republic .

Life

Zacharski came to the USA in 1975 as the official representative of a Polish export company, Polish-American Machinery Corporation (POLAMCO) . Unofficially, he was an agent of the 1st Department of the Polish Interior Ministry. It was housed in the neighborhood of the heavily indebted Hughes Aircraft Corporation employee William Bell.

Bell handed Zacharski $ 110,000 and $ 60,000 in gold coins to Zacharski with secret information and plans on the Hawk and Patriot missile defense systems, as well as information on the stealth technology of the Rockwell B-1 bomber, plans for the F-15 fighter and the M1 Abrams tank .

In 1981 the FBI was informed about the activities of the Polish agent by a Polish UN employee who had fled to the USA. The FBI arrested Zacharski on June 23, 1981. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on December 14, 1981 (one day after the introduction of martial law in Poland). In June 1985 he and two other Eastern European agents were exchanged for 25 Western agents and political prisoners on Glienicke Bridge in Berlin. The exchange was arranged by Wolfgang Vogel .
