Marie Andeßner

Marie Andeßner (* 1833 in Eberschwang ; † 1906 in Gries near Bozen ; other spellings: Maria Andeßner, Marie Andessner ), was an Austrian world traveler. She traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, America and Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Various daily newspapers took notice of Andessner's travels:

"(Journey to India.) Our compatriot, Fraulein Marie Andeßner, left here for Trieste on November 1st to embark on the beautiful Lloyd steamer 'Imperatore' to Bombay. We wish the intrepid lady, who, in her thirst for knowledge, already Europe , as well as having wandered through the northern part of Africa, and now wants to cross the Indian suburbs, all the luck for your great journey. " (New waiting room on the Inn, November 9, 1895, p. 5)

The following brief tribute was published on the occasion of her death:

"Miss Andessner, who lived in Salzburg, traveled extensively and visited all five parts of the world, mostly alone and without any company." (Salzburger Volksblatt, March 2, 1906, p. 3)

The gendup - Center for Gender Studies and the Advancement of Women at the University of Salzburg has named a prize and scholarship program after Marie Andeßner.

The Austrian artist Irene Andessner is a descendant of Marie Andeßner and made a work about her.
