The Marienborn is a Mariendenkmal in front of the west portal of the Marienkirche in Neuss .

history

The Mariendenkmal, inaugurated on November 4, 1906 by Anton Fischer, was to form the center of the newly laid out square in front of the second church in the center of Neuss, completed in 1902 . The monument , financed solely by donations from the population, was created by Joseph Hammerschmidt . During the Second World War , Prelate Adolf Colling, the Lord Mayor Dr. Tödtmann prevents the Marienborn from being melted down for armament purposes . When the neighboring Rhineland House was bombed, such a large pressure wave was triggered that the statue of Mary was moved, but remained on its base.

The entry in the list of monuments of the city of Neuss took place in 2005. In 2006 the parish celebrated 100 years of Marienborn and had the monument, especially the fountain, overhauled again through donations. The Auxiliary Bishop Woelki from Cologne celebrated at a high mass celebrated as part of these festivities .
