Mary's Bell in St. Mary's Cathedral in Estonia's capital Tallinn

The Marienglocke in Tallinn is - next to the smaller Salvatorglocke - one of two bells that the bell caster Detlof Riedeweg cast in Reval in 1685 for the cathedral church of St. Marien . It is the largest bell in the cathedral of today's capital of Estonia and has been registered as an individual monument in the country's register of national cultural monuments since 1995 .

history

The casting of the Marienglocke was preceded by the fire in the Marienkirche in 1684, which caused the previous bell to melt in the blazing heat. With the ore from the destroyed bell, Detlof Riedeweg created the Neuguss, named after the Virgin Mary , on behalf of the church mayor Erasmus Samuel Gottschild in the following year 1685 .

description

The bell shows a figurative representation of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus and bears the inscription "MARIA MATER DEI " written in Latin .

On one side of the image of Mary there is the following inscription:

“COME INTO THE CHURCH TO MY SOUND
TO PRAY AND CHOOSE.
I AM MELTED BY FEVERHEAT AND MOLDED
AS SORRY BY THE FIRE OF THE DUHM COMPLETELY BURNED OFF.
I was poured into this shape after a lAR and as the picture shows you, I was named MARIENGLOCK. "

On the other side of the picture of Mary is written:

“IT IS GOD SHIELD, FOREVER. THROUGH FIRE, I FLOWED.
DETLOF RIEDEWEG CAST ME IN REVAL. ANNO in 1685. "

Eugen von Nottbeck and Wilhelm Neumann described the bell as an art monument at the beginning of the 20th century in their work History and Art Monuments of the City of Reval .
