Marienhospital Altenessen

The Marienhospital Altenessen is a hospital in the Altenessen district of Essen . It belongs to the sponsoring Catholic Clinic Essen , which has been part of the Contilia group since 2014 .

history

The origins of the Marienhospital Altenessen go back to the year 1886, when on February 7th a hospital construction association was founded by Catholic citizens on the occasion of the silver jubilee of rector Wilhelm Weber, from 1891 first pastor of St. Johann in Altenessen, which two months later more than a thousand Members belonged. After only two and a half years, the completed hospital was inaugurated on October 28, 1888 and handed over to its intended use. A contract concluded on November 1 of the same year regulated the assumption of nursing care by the Cooperative of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Elisabeth zu Essen, which also extended to outpatient care in the two nearest parishes. It was only after almost seventy years that the nuns were withdrawn on June 30, 1966 due to a lack of young people.

In view of the steadily growing demands on health care, the hospital was first expanded in 1892, followed by five more in the years to come, above all the epidemic house built in 1912. The buildings survived the Second World War without significant damage, and further renovation and expansion measures began as early as 1948 and continued until 1967.

From 1971 to 1974, to replace the large number of individual structural measures over the past eighty years, a completely new building was built, which was designed for up to 392 beds and is still in use today. During construction, the first bishop of Essen , Franz Hengsbach , poured a concrete pillar on January 8, 1973 instead of laying the foundation stone in the entrance hall of the new building . The bas-relief of a protective mantle Madonna as the patroness of the house on the front of the column was designed by the Altenessen master sculptor Hugo Hildebrand .
