history
Contilia was founded in 2006 by the St. Elisabeth Foundation Essen (66 percent), the St. Marien Hospital Foundation in Mülheim an der Ruhr (33 percent) and the Caritas organization in the Diocese of Essen e. V. (1 percent) founded. Contilia manages hospitals, retirement homes and other facilities in the health sector on behalf of the shareholders. Since 2018, around 7,200 employees have been working in currently 46 Contilia-managed, independent facilities via the affiliated companies. The group generates annual sales of around 495 million euros. Dirk Albrecht (spokesman) and Jens Egert are in charge of the management.

Education, training and further education
In the area of education and training, the nursing school in Mülheim an der Ruhr, which is still located in the St. Marien Hospital, is an important branch of the new Contilia Academy. Here, an extensive training program is offered that is geared towards its own employees as well as external staff. There is also adult education.
