The house was founded in 1901 by the Camillian Order as a sanctuary for alcoholics of the Catholic denomination . During the First and Second World Wars the house was used as a hospital .
From 1945 to 1952 it served as a station for internal medicine in the municipal hospitals that were destroyed in the war, now the Essen University Hospital . After that, the house was used as a rehab clinic again. Economic pressures led to the handover of the house. By 2013, 16,000 patients had been treated in 112 years of operation. After the takeover in 2014, seven fathers remained active in the Kamillushaus.
