Chapel in Bettenried

The Marienkapelle in the Ofterschwang district of Bettenried is a building from the 19th century.

History and description

Master bricklayer Franz-Anton Hörmann from Hinang built the chapel in 1856, but the building could not be inaugurated until October 19, 1860, because the royal building authorities in Kempten had requested changes after the construction. The chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary , her patron saint is St. Magnus .

The equipment includes a lecture cross from 1860 and two reverse glass pictures depicting Saints Nepomuk and Theresa, as well as an oil painting. Extensive renovation work began in 1984. Among other things, the roof had to be renovated, which was originally covered with wooden shingles and then replaced by a tiled roof. In the course of the renovation measures, the entire roof structure was renewed and then covered with copper sheet. Walls and plastering were refurbished, wooden floors, substructures and chairs were removed. The interior was provided with a concrete floor slab that was reinforced with steel mesh. The chancel and corridor were then laid out with panels and new, light-colored wooden stalls were installed. The arched windows were renewed and the crucifixion group was restored by Otto Diringer.
