The Marienplatz is one of the belebtesten places in Görlitz city center, and also forms the interface to the old town . The square is flanked on the north side by the thick tower and bordered on the south side by the former Art Nouveau department store. Wilhelminian-style buildings surround the square on the western and eastern sides. The modern design of the square after the renovation in 2001/2002 led to divided opinions among the Görlitz population. The Senckenberg Museum für Naturkunde is located on the west side of the square.

history

Thick Tower and old Marienplatz, 1892
Marienplatz around 1970

Marienplatz got its name in 1852, previously this area was called "Taubenmarkt". This square was part of the defenses until the city wall was cut. To the south of the thick tower stood the so-called “Frauentor”, it was built with the city expansion around 1250 with the thick tower (also known as the woman's tower). The tower and the gate 1305 are mentioned for the first time. The gate system was executed three times. The inner gate facing the city side was connected to the city wall on both sides and stood in front of the tower on Steinstrasse. The middle passage was built over with a building and had a portcullis made of boards with iron shoes. The third gate was a very well-fortified building, similar to a bastion. This building was already in the moat and was connected to the city wall with thick walls. A bridge followed to the south, spanning the moat. This was built from the ground up with stone in 1595 and ended just before the gate. The bridge and the gateway were connected by a drawbridge. This drawbridge was replaced by a stone one in 1772. In 1778 the portcullis was removed. In 1838 the two inner gates were demolished and in 1847/48 the rest of the Frauentor and the bridge followed. The trench was filled.

today

The square was adorned with a water feature that took up almost the entire central area. It was built on a former extinguishing water basin. However, according to the city and the planners, this design no longer met today's requirements for a central square by the beginning of the 1990s. The course was fundamentally redesigned in 2001/2002. The large water feature was replaced by a water band, an accessible fountain system. The square is now more spacious and easier to cross. Critics complain, among other things, of the little green.
