Location of Görlitz city center

The Görlitz city center borders on the historic old town and is characterized by the buildings that were built during the early days and the Art Nouveau buildings . Since Görlitz survived the Second World War almost undamaged, visitors can enjoy a coherent historical cityscape.

Development and history

The construction of the inner city resulted in two city centers in the city, the “old” center Obermarkt and Untermarkt and the “new” one on Kaisertrutz. Over time this center shifted again and again. Especially during the GDR era , the central core moved in the direction of Berliner Straße and Demianiplatz .

The city center lost its importance during socialism , as it became unsightly on the one hand and, on the other hand , lost its central location due to newly developed areas such as Weinhübel . It was only with the emergence of the prefabricated building district in the Königshufen district that it was brought back to the center and experienced a small boom. After the fall of the Wall, an elaborate renovation was carried out with subsidies, which not only beautified the city center, but also made it more attractive again for traders. When the Frauentor City Center was built on the site of the demolished Wilhelmtheater , the upper part of Berliner Strasse almost completely died out, as the center was drawn towards Demianiplatz.

Business

The lower part of Berliner Straße is now the main pedestrian zone in Görlitz. Not far from here is the Görlitz department store , one of the few preserved pre-war department stores in Germany. It was operated by Hertie GmbH until it closed in 2009 and was the only department store in this chain without an escalator. Behind the historic department store is the Frauentor City Center, which is the location of many shops. However, the hoped-for success of the center has not yet materialized.

traffic

At the upper end of the Berliner Strasse at the corner of Bahnhofstrasse is Görlitz Central Station with a connection to the Trilex network and the Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn Gesellschaft (ODEG).
