The Nikolaivorstadt was the original point of origin of the city of Görlitz . It is part of the historic old town and is characterized by a rather small town character.

history

In the Middle Ages, the first settlers settled on the Lunitz, a tributary of the Neisse at that time. The first church was built in the middle of the 12th century, and it still bears the name Nikolaikirche today .

Attractions

In contrast to the historic old town, there are only a few particularly outstanding individual buildings in the Nikolaivorstadt. Here it is above all ensembles, spatial situations and street scenes that characterize the protected area. The Nikolaivorstadt area is a redevelopment area and only includes part of the district of the same name.

The Nikolaiturm belongs to the old defensive system of the city. Next to him is the Nikolaizwinger with parts of the old city wall. The Görlitz Toy Museum is located in a historic old building.

The Dark Gate is the last existing city gate. It was first mentioned in a document in 1455 as the "gate at the guardian of the dead". The adjacent half-timbered house had been the executioner's residence since 1571 . Because of his dishonorable profession, he had to move to the city gates. The inscription "1666 - LSB" is attached to what is now known as the executioner's house, referring to the then Görlitz executioner Lorenz Straßburger.
