Executioner's house and north view of the Dark Gate

The Finstertor , also known as the poor sinners gate , was part of the fortification of the Görlitz suburbs. It formed the northern entrance to the Nikolaivorstadt , which was surrounded by a mud wall and fences. The ogival passage had a portcullis. The Dark Gate is the only surviving gate of the fortifications of the suburbs.

The gate was first mentioned in 1455 as the gate near the gravedigger . The name Armesündertor comes from the time when the convicted sinners were led through the Nikolaitor to the place of execution at the Finstertor. The neighboring half-timbered house is the executioner's house . It was the hangman's house and was first mentioned in 1377. However, the executioner probably lived behind the Schwarzen Gasse within the city walls until 1571 and then moved to the Dark Gate. After the construction of the Büttelei (prison) within the city walls around 1589, he moved to the city again for a few years. Finally he came back to the Dark Gate in 1601.

The inscription "1666 LSB" can be read on the street side of the Schafrichterhaus. It is reminiscent of the Görlitz executioner Lorenz Straßburger. The year 1676 and a drawing of an ax can be found in the courtyard. In 1810 the executioner's house was renewed, the lower part of the stone walls were built up and an adobe framework was placed on top.

Today the executioner's house is used by the so-called Jugendbauhütte, an institution of the German Foundation for Monument Protection . Here, young people can do a voluntary year in monument preservation .
