The 45 meter high Nikolaiturm is part of the former city fortifications of Görlitz . It is located in the oldest part of the city and borders directly on the Nikolaivorstadt .

history

Presumably, the Nikolaiturm was already part of the Görlitz city fortifications before the first major expansion of the town in 1250 . In 1348 it was first mentioned in a document. Like the other towers in the city, it was part of a city gate. Like the Frauentor, the Nikolaitor was designed in three ways. The inner, inner city gate stood between the tower and the Nikolaizwinger approximately at the level of the entrance to the Karpfengrund. A gate with a strong portcullis followed in the middle. The outer gate stood in the Nikolaigraben and was connected to the Nikolaivorstadt with a drawbridge. When opened, the drawbridge covered the entire gate.

The tower was accessed via the city wall or an external staircase. After the city fire in 1717, the formerly slim, steep top was replaced by a baroque hood. Like large parts of the city fortifications, the gate belonging to the tower was demolished in 1848 after the bridge had only been expanded 13 years earlier. Originally, the upper rooms of the Nikolaiturm could be reached via an external staircase. It was not until 1752 that the ground level entrance was created through the 2.86 m thick wall at this point. In 1903 the last left towers the watchman's room upstairs. From 1969 to 2015 the building was managed by the Görlitzer Heimatforschern eV circle as an exhibition and observation tower , including an extensive collection of historical locks, fittings and lights.

The Förderverein Kulturstadt Görlitz-Zgorzelec eV (FVKS) and the Kulturhistorisches Museum Görlitz have been jointly operating the tower since autumn 2016 .
