The ox bastion in Görlitz is part of the former city fortifications near the Peterskirche. While the actual "gate on the Kahle" was demolished in 1834, the round building of the bastion and the ox pen were preserved.

Since the Middle Ages, a path from the city to the cattle pasture directly on the Neisse, from which the bastion and the nearby ox pen got its name , has led through the “Tor an der Kahle”, a side exit of the city . The bastion was built to protect the gate and was preserved after it was demolished in 1834. Together with the Kaisertrutz and the Nikolaiturm , the Ochsenbastei is one of the remains of the Görlitz city fortifications that are well worth seeing.

The entrance to the Ochsenbastei is on the Uferstraße and the exit on the Bergstraße.

Terraces

A small baroque-style garden was laid out on the fountain terrace as a public green area from 1962 to 1963. The plans come from the garden director at the time, Henry Kraft. This facility was built as part of the national construction project with free help from the Görlitz townspeople.

In the past, farm buildings from houses on Kränzelstrasse stood on the upper terrace. An open space was created in the 1960s. In 2000 the area was redesigned in line with the times.

In 1999/2000 the bastion and garden were comprehensively renovated and restored.
