Former ramparts - Nikolaizwinger

The Nikolaizwinger as one of the two remaining remains of the double city wall ring around Görlitz is now a green area. It is located at the entrance of Nikolaistrasse to Nikolaivorstadt . The Zwinger originally protected Görlitz together with four city towers ( Dicker Turm / Frauenturm , Nikolaiturm , Reichenbacher Turm ), many bastions (e.g. Kaisertrutz , Ochsenbastei ) and mighty gates. The corner bastion adjacent to it, the Hotherbastei, is the only one that has been preserved . The large, recognizable loopholes for cannons at the Hotherbastei indicate that it was used to secure the Nikolai and Neisse suburbs. In 1953/54 the Nikolaizwinger was redesigned by the citizens of Görlitz as a garden area according to a design by the garden architect Henry Kraft as part of the national reconstruction project. In the 1990s, these structures were taken up again in a modified form.
