Marienstift (Bockum-Hövel)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marienstift in Bockum, today's Hamm-Bockum-Hövel district of the city of Hamm , was from 1909 a branch for Catholic nuns with a monastery or monastery character . Since the nurses' station was closed in 1977, the premises have been used by the central office of the dean's office in Hamm-Nord; in 1982 the kindergarten moved to a new building next door. In 1994 the nurses' station was newly staffed; Sisters of the same order settled in the Catholic parish of Christ the King in Hövel.

History of the Marienstift

Marienstift in Bockum.

Around 1907/1908 the unmarried and childless pensioner Elisabeth Nagel approached the church council of the parish of St. Stephanus in Bockum to donate her inherited property, house Bockum No. 57 (today's Barsener Straße 33) with a small workers' apartment to the parish . She made it a condition that a branch for Catholic nuns should be set up there. Ms. Nagel claimed the right to live and care for herself in this facility until her death.

On April 8, 1908, the superior general of the "Sisters of the Christian Schools of Mercy in Heiligenstadt", whose motherhouse is today in Bestwig in the Sauerland region, agreed to establish a Bockum branch. The Bockum church council discussed this on April 16, 1908 and finally approved the plans. On April 24, 1908, the Bishop of Munster gave his consent. On May 13, 1908, Pastor Weckendorf drafted the application to obtain ministerial approval for the branch. This was issued on October 9, 1908 by decree of the "Minister of Spiritual, Educational and Medical Affairs". The settlement of Catholic nuns was allowed to practice outpatient nursing and to manage a custody for small children and a handicraft school for “Catholic girls” who are no longer compulsory.

By November 9, 1909, the conversion to the new requirements was completed. On this day four "Sisters of the Christian Schools of Mercy in Heiligenstadt" started their work in Bockum. The solemn introduction of the sisters Antonia, Berzina, Gertrudis and Epiphanis, with whom the founder lived together until her death at the age of 71 in 1921, was carried out by the superior of the heavy house in Nordkirchen.

Over the years a kindergarten room and a handicraft room were added. In 1924 the Marienstift was expanded to include a house chapel. Nevertheless, there was far too little space available, also for the living rooms and bedrooms of the sisters. The government therefore threatened the order with the closure of the kindergarten and the handicraft school if no suitable premises were created. In the summer of 1932, a renovation and extension was started, in the course of which the chapel was also redesigned. The costs amounted to 24,598 M, with house painting, hauling and handyman services being done free of charge by the citizens of Bockum. On February 2, 1933, the expanded Marienstift could be inaugurated.

In October 1927, Sister Hildegardis and Sister Theotrudis moved from the Marienstift to the newly emerging Herz-Gemeinde, which arose as the rectorate of the St. Stephanus Congregation .-Stephanus-Gemeinde had been bought, a branch for kindergarten and handicraft. At first they were subordinate to the superior of the Marienstift. When a third sister was added in the winter of 1928/29, the Herz-Jesu-Haus became independent.

Like many church institutions, the Marienstift was constantly threatened with liquidation or conversion into a communal institution from 1933 onwards. With the support of the episcopal authorities in Münster and the parish in Bockum, however, the sisters were able to defend the leadership for themselves.

For the period from 1933 to 1936, eyewitness reports can be used to name some of the sisters who were active at the Marienstift at that time; Overall, the house was inhabited by five to six sisters during this period:

  • Superior: Sister Maria Justina (1921–27, 1933–39 and from 1946 in Bockum)
  • Kitchen: Sister Christophera,
  • Handicraft School: Sister Edgaria,
  • Church, Chapel and Nursing: Sister Klara Maria,
  • Head of the kindergarten: Sister Gosberta.

The equipment of the kindergarten and the daily routine during this time can also be roughly traced. The children were brought up religiously and in order. In summer, games were mostly played outside in the yard, where a sandpit, two small and one large swings and a gymnastics bar were available. At the back of the courtyard, a “Lourdes grotto” was installed to the left of the path. To the right of it was a gazebo. The path led to a kitchen garden that was part of the facility. In winter or when the weather was bad, the house was painted, beads tied up or handicrafts, and songs and prayers were taught. The nurses were the first point of contact for illnesses, even if there was only a small dressing room. Only when the sister could not help was the doctor, Fritz Pabst, also known as "Lindenblütenfritz", visited. During Advent, nativity plays were performed in the presence of the parents. The Christmas tree was in a stand with a built-in music box, and a “heaven” with a “ladder to earth” was built on which the Christ Child could be put down one step if behaved well. The children went around singing carolers, and the proceeds went to the sisters. In the handicraft school for “Catholic girls who are no longer compulsory” in the front part of the house, many farmer's daughters came in the winter months, also from the Nordick and Herbern farmers. Here they sewed their trousseau themselves. Some nuns were buried in the old part of the Bockum cemetery, where their tombstones can still be found today.

In 1949 the institution celebrated the 50th anniversary of the order of Sister Maria Justina (1874–1956). The following statements were found in the Bockum-Hövel city archive:

“These days it was the 50th anniversary of the day on which the superior of the Marienstift in Bockum joined the cooperative of the Heiligenstätter sisters. She has been back in Bockum since 1946. Sister Maria Justina was superior in Bockum from 1921 to 1927 and from 1933 to 1939. During her tenure in 1924, the Marienstift was equipped with an attractive chapel. It is thanks to the venerable jubilee's energy and prudence that the children's care school and sewing school have developed so well. The entire parish of St. Stephanus was happy with her on the day of honor of the superior and gave her as a promise on the further path of life that she may continue to work in our community for a long time, for the greater glory of God. "

In 1959 the “Marienstift” sister house celebrated its 50th anniversary with a high mass.

On September 16, 1970, Sister Gosberta, who had been a kindergarten nurse in Bockum from 1915 to 1970, left the Marienstift to spend her retirement years in the order's own house in Diestedde. In 1977 her sister Ruth, who had been in kindergarten since 1961, retired. She moved to Nordkirchen and was replaced by Sister Bona. On July 31, 1977, Sister Bona gave up running the kindergarten. Also in 1977, Sister Ruth, the last religious sister, retired. The nurses' station was then closed.

After the new kindergarten was built in 1981/82, the monastery building was redesigned into a parish center with a parish hall and meeting room. This could be rented for family parties and celebrations for a fee. On May 31, 1990, the rental was then completely stopped.

In 1979, the central office of the dean's office in Hamm-Nord moved to the building and set up its offices in the Marienstift. This also eliminated the position of the render at the Stephanuskirche.

In 1991 the decision to give up the parish hall was put into practice. It was rebuilt and made available to the central office, which then moved into the new rooms. The parish had been forced to give up the parish hall because otherwise no approval would have been given for the planned new building of a parish hall on Dörholtstrasse, which could be built in this way in 1992/1993 and inaugurated on July 3, 1993.

Seventeen years after the nurses' station was closed, it was filled with "new" sisters in October 1994: Claudia Maulhardt, Theresia Lehmeier and Edith Apweiler; Sisters of this order have been settled with the Congregation of Christ the King for several years.

The kindergarten did not suffer the same fate as the nurses' station. In 1981 a new building was built adjacent to the original monastery building, which the kindergarten was able to move into in 1982.

In 1983, through the initiative of a father (Mr. Reiners), a parenting initiative supported by the kindergarten was founded, which enforced the installation of a traffic light system at the corner of Horster Strasse and Barsener Strasse to make the way to the kindergarten safer for the children. From 1988 family weekends were held regularly, in Hopsten (until 1992), Freckenhorst (1993–1997) and Föckinghausen (1998–1999). The planning by the team was accompanied by Pastors Gerken and Sundermann.

In 1990 the St. Martin's parade, which had previously been designed together with the Von Vincke primary school, was decoupled and it was decided to graduate from kindergarten. In 1991, a requirement of the youth welfare office forced new opening times from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. as before, in order to guarantee continuous five-hour opening. Ms. Kernberg established a church service group to prepare services for small children. Willow huts were built together with parents to redesign the playground.

In 1992 the kindergarten team took part in the Stephanusmarkt for the first time, and since then it has been regularly once a year. The Christmas bazaar, which was initially held for two years, was replaced by handicraft activities in the parish hall for the children.

From 1994, nine places for all-day care (7.30 a.m. - 4 p.m.) were offered to families with two earners. The necessary modifications, for example to be able to offer lunch from 12.30 p.m. and the subsequent break in the gym, were carried out by the porter. Also in 1994 Pastor Gerken and Mrs. Bücker, the then director of the kindergarten, said goodbye. The parish administration was initially taken over by Dechant Booms and then handed over to Pastor Sundermann. Ms. Gieseker was hired as the new head of the kindergarten. However, she left at her own request six months later, so that Ms. Martin from the team initially took over the management of the team and then finally took over from February 1, 1995.

A children's clothing market has been held twice a year since 1995. In the same year the kindergarten was renovated with the help of parents; two interns, Anja Gräwe and Claudia Formann, redesigned the corridor walls and the gym and added Disney motifs. The “Sunshine” cafeteria was set up in the large hallway, and is used for breakfast and getting to know each other. The side rooms of the groups were designed with various light elements to create "cozy rooms".

As of January 1, 1996, the Kindergarten Act gave all children aged three and over a legal right to a place in a kindergarten. Since the kindergarten did not have the capacity for the associated requirements, an application was made in 1997 to set up an additional afternoon group, which was also approved. The afternoon group only lasted for two years, with nine children being looked after on three afternoons, starting on September 1, 1997. Also in 1997 a wooden house for sand toys was built by some fathers.

In 1999, another change to the GTK meant that the specialist hours and supplementary hours were after the afternoon occupancy of the facility, which is checked by the regional association on average once a year. Also in 1999 the festival week for the 90th anniversary of the facility took place. It began with a family church service and an “open day”, followed by a children's Bible afternoon and other events. The festival week was concluded with the lantern parade on St. Martin's Day.

In 2000, Pastor Sundermann left the parish. Due to a lack of priests, the position was initially vacant until Pastor Werges, also to support the pastoral care unit, transferred to the community in April 2000. As the contact person for the kindergarten, he designed the children's services together with them. Also in 2000 the four Catholic parishes in Bockum-Hövel were merged to form a pastoral care unit and a pastoral council was formed. The Catholic day-care centers were encouraged to cooperate more closely. From now on, the leaders of the facilities met with Pastor Winzeler, who was responsible for the pastoral care unit, and members of the church council to exchange ideas. The playground was redesigned again, pergolas, a slide and a wooden train were installed outside.

In 2002, new changes in the law on day care facilities for children led to a questionnaire being used to determine the needs of individual families with regard to opening times. On the basis of the data collected, a new concept for the facility was drawn up from 2003, which was also due to changes in the pedagogy of the individual day-care centers. Parents should be given the opportunity to deal with the goals and content of the educational work in order to create more transparency. In this context, the afternoon offers were also restructured or specified (action afternoon, support group, movement construction site and from 2005 a kindergarten choir).

From August 2004, the educational agreement concluded by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, which came into force on August 1, 2003, resulted in the preparation of educational documentation in which the development of the individual children is recorded in writing. In addition, information on this development is provided as part of a parenting language day. On June 7, 2005, the launch event for Quam took place, the Hamm quality initiative with the aim of quality management. The kindergarten started with eleven other Catholic kindergartens in the system, which should lead to an improvement in the range of day-care centers while at the same time optimizing organizational processes and minimizing conflict situations in order to achieve greater economic efficiency.

The pastoral care unit was also dissolved in 2005. The four Catholic parishes of Bockum-Hövels were merged to form the parish of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Winzeler took over the leadership until summer 2005, then Pastor Peitzmann took over the leadership of the parish. There was now only one church council and one parish council. The day-care centers were therefore subordinated to the same employer, which intensified the cooperation between the individual institutions. A staff meeting of around 80-100 employees has been held at regular intervals since 2006, with the participation of the MAV, the personnel committee and central management, the agency and all employees. For the first time in 2006 a quality representative was appointed; the core processes were also worked out with the team.

A language level survey based on the expanded section 36 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Schools Act resulted in the first implementation of the Delfin-4 test developed by Professor Fried at Dortmund University for children who are two years before school enrollment. Children with speech problems are subjected to a second test procedure. The day care centers from Bockum-Hövel and another district of Hamm were the first to take part in the trial phase. The quality manual was also completed in 2007. On August 30, 2007, the participating day care centers received an official certificate for the completion of the quality manuals for the individual centers.
