James "Stump" Johnson (born January 17, 1902 in Clarksville , Tennessee , † December 5, 1969 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American pianist and singer of the St. Louis blues .

Live and act

Johnson, who also used the pseudonyms Shorty George and Snitcher Roberts , came to St. Louis from Tennessee with his family around 1909. Son Long, a legendary pianist from the city's red light district, had a formative influence. The first recordings were made in 1929 for the QRS label; the Hokum blues The Duck's Yas Yas was a party hit in St. Louis. Johnson played him three times; it was covered by Tampa Red , the B-side The Snitchers Blues was recorded by Red as Friendless Blues . Further recordings were made for OKeh and Brunswick and in September and October 1929 for Paramount in Richmond , on which Ike Rodgers and the cornetist "Baby" James participated. In 1932 he recorded for Victor Records with Roosevelt Sykes in Dallas. He played his last recordings before the Second World War in Chicago on August 2, 1933 Bluebird one (Do not Give My Lard Away / Stedy Grindin). Dorthaa Trowbridge, JD Short and Pinetop Sparks participated.

After completing his military service in the US Army, he worked in his brother Jesse's restaurant in St. Louis. In late 1954, he made a brief comeback after being found by Charles "Lindy" O'Brien and interviewed by Bob Koester. He worked in the post-war years in the tax office of the St. Louis city government and as a police officer in nearby Wellston. Stump Johnson had his last recording session for Euphonic in 1964 , when he contributed songs to a movie soundtrack (Blues Like Showers of Rain) that was released in 1970.

In 2007 an album was released that contained the title Snitchers Blues , recorded by Paul Affeldt in 1954 , as well as other previously unreleased pieces.
