Gangjeong Naval Base

The Gangjeong naval base is a project of the South Korean Navy near the town of Gangjeong in Seogwipo on Jeju Island . An area of ​​480,000 square meters with space for 20 warships and two cruise ships is planned.

The local population tries to prevent this project. On the island there are natural spaces around the Halla-san volcano , which are recognized by UNESCO as worthy of protection. In addition, the islanders had been promised a special peace due to the Jeju massacre . In April 2011, however, the amended “Jeju Special Law” with the development plan for the base was passed.
