Naval Monument (Stavanger)
The Marine Monument ( Norwegian : Sjøfartsmonumentet ) is a monument in the Norwegian city of Stavanger . It commemorates all sailors who perished at sea.
The monument is located in the city's fish market ( Fisketorget ), at the southern end of Vågen harbor .
The monument was erected in 1968 by the artist Arnold Haukeland and unveiled on June 7, 1968. It was donated by the shipowner Sigval Bergesen , with the municipality of Stavanger financing the base. The sculpture, standing on a very high triangular base, was designed from seven parts of seven different ships. The eye-catching monument is popularly called shrimp .
