Natural watercolors

For the group of natural watercolors, Reis developed a concept of using water as a painting medium by letting the flowing water guide the brush. Reis installs a stretcher frame covered with cotton cloth in specially selected rivers, so that their sediments are deposited on the cloth , giving it structure and coloring. After a period of time determined by Reis, the frame is lifted out of the water and the surface is dried, tensioned and sealed.

Mario Reis started the series of natural watercolors in 1977. Since then this work has developed into a worldwide project. He carried out the following natural watercolor projects, among others: (2007) waters from the Neandertal, (2004) natural watercolors North America: California, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Alberta, British Columbia, Canton Schwyz, Switzerland. (2001) Natural Watercolors North America: Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Utah. (1997) The Haller level, Baden-Württemberg. (1995) Carinthia, Austria. Blind drawings

For his blind drawings , Reis blindfolded his eyes and drew with two pens and with both hands. As an extension of this technique, Reis then attached 5 or 10 pens to his fingers, sometimes working with the right, sometimes with the left, sometimes with both hands.

The title of the work Manifest der Impulse as well as the drawing technique used bring these works close to automatism , whereby the artist is primarily inspired by the noise of the pens on the paper.

Train tracks

Mario Reis lets train wheels roll over metal surfaces, so that abrasions, breaks and deformations occur. He understands the resulting works from the train tracks as printed graphics .

Salt work

The small-format, abstract works made of salt have a crystalline surface and a block-like format.
